Keeping Quiet

Keeping Quiet
-BY PABLO NERUDA

The poet speaks of the necessity of introspection in a moment of silence in today’s world. This introspection according to him can create a better understanding of man’s relationship with himself and others. If there is moment of silence and introspection and all the activities seize for sometime it would lead to peace in world.
Everyone will be together and this oneness or universal brotherhood is necessary for survival of human race. We all should commit ourselves to complete silence and stillness for a space of 12 sec only and experience an absolute peace in absence of hustle and bustle of life. Human will not destroy other species and will also sit back and think what they are doing to themselves and thus will learn to take care of themselves.
Fishermen will not harm the whales is a metaphor which is used to highlight the nature [other species] when the earth looks quiet and colorless, the seeds are germinating under its surface and getting ready to bring life back on earth. Likewise when we are quite and still during our introspection we need not necessarily be inactive, a regeneration (of body, soul and mind) may be taking place within us which may contribute immense to our growth and development as human beings.
Q.1.What does ‘counting up to twelve’ and ‘keeping still’ helps us achieve?
Ans. It will help us achieve a precious silence enabling us to understand ourselves better and introspection will also make us realize the consequence of our actions and value of universal brotherhood.
Q.2.Do you think the poet advocates total inactivity?
Ans.  No, the poet does not advocate total inactivity because he is only advising readers to observe introspection for a short while so as to reflect upon our actions and choices. He also points out that during introspection we may seem to be still but the churning happening within will lead to regeneration of our mind, body and soul.
Q.3.Why does the poet call ‘total inactivity’ ‘death’?
ANS.  The poet does so because he thinks that life is about moving on, growing (mentally ,intellectually and spiritually) and achieving newer heights every day.

Total inactivity according to him would not let us do so and hence would contribute to our stagnation which the man destroys thoughtlessly.
